External wall insulation

The walls of your home act as a barrier between the inside and the outside world. If these barriers aren’t insulated, it can lead to substantial energy losses. Insulating walls isn’t just about keeping the cold out, but also about maintaining a consistent and comfortable indoor environment by giving you more control of your internal environment. The thicker the product, the better the barrier.

Insulated walls that use the right product and installed properly:
  • Reduce energy bills: Prevent heat loss in winter and retain cool air in summer.
  • Enhance comfort: Create a more consistent internal comfortable temperature .
  • Acoustic Benefits: reduce noise transfer, making your home a peaceful sanctuary from external disturbances that are out of your control .

New climate zones

Previously, New Zealand was divided into three climate zones – Zones 1 and 2 for most of the North Island and Zone 3 for the South Island and the central plateau. There are now six climate zones across New Zealand, and the new insulation requirements are tied to the zones.

In 2020 the government updated the thermal performance requirements for insulation. The new standards, called H1 Energy Efficiency Acceptable Solution H1/AS1 apply to new homes and buildings up to 300 m2. Requirements for buildings over 300 m2 have been combined into the new Acceptable Solution H1/AS2. The new standards are designed to make our buildings warmer, drier and up to 40% more energy efficient. For builders and installers, this means changes to the way insulation is specified and installed.

So how do we increase the R-Value of floors, walls and roofs?

By increasing the amount and the quality of the insulation products we’re using in the construction of your home.

Floors – Adding underslab (concrete) insulation, slab edge insulation or, for timber floors, extra and better quality underfloor insulation.

Walls – Increasing the quality and depth of the insulation we’re using in the walls, often meaning thicker walls to hold larger insulation and reducing the number of studs and nogs which are treated as thermal bridges.

Roofs – This is the biggy. With the minimum R-Value doubling, double layers of high quality insulation are required, or very dense high R-Value insulation needs to be installed in the roof cavity. Condensation is a large risk with adding insulation in roof spaces, so extra measures need to be taken to ensure moisture isn’t a home for mould growth.

We’re proud to offer our customers some of the leading names in the insulation industry.
